Limehouse: London's lost Chinatown

My walking tour explores London's first Chinatown in the Docklands. Many buildings and even some whole streets have now gone, but I bring the community back to life with some forensic urban archaeology and stories of where the Chinese sailors lived, worked and spent their leisure time. We also meet some of the local women who married Chinese sailors and the generations of mixed heritage children of the Chinese East End. We also take a critical look at how Chinese Limehouse caught the imagination of contemporary journalists, authors, songwriters, film-makers and the general public. Tap or click on any photo below for a more detailed description of the tour, and what is included.

Tickets are £15 (£18 from January 2027). £2 from every ticket sold is donated to the local charity the Chinese Association of Tower Hamlets. We also support the local independent businesses Three Colt Gallery for our coffee break and the New Beijing restaurant for an optional post-tour lunch.
